Like all online services, Skype uses your data. Managing your data can be easy if you know how much you’re using, and where to look for how much data you have left in your monthly Internet plan. Check out our helpful article below to learn about managing your Xplornet data, which includes details on the Usage Tracker.

Skype is a very popular online calling service for making voice calls, but the real fun starts when you use Skype for one-on-one or group video calls.

Exactly how much data am I using?

So, how much data do voice and video calls use? They use different amounts of data because they’re doing slightly different things. For our examples, we’ll talk in terms data used per hour, and we’ll use both Megabytes (MB) and Gigabytes (GB). For reference, 1024 MB is equal to 1 GB. Let’s use a 50 GB Internet package so we can compare the numbers, too.

Voice calls

Voice only calls use the least amount of data on Skype, which means that you can make more calls and spend more time on calls using just the voice feature instead of video and voice.

Let’s say you were to make an hour long voice call – this would use 90 MB. So, for each GB, you will get 11 hours of Skype voice only talk time, and if you’re really chatty, for 50 GB you can talk for 398 hours. That’s over 16 days!

Video calls

Video calls, or video-chat, are the most commonly used of Skype’s core features. However, video calls use more data than voice only calls, so it’s important to know the difference. Video calls use 270 MB per hour, which is good for 4 hours on 1 GB. On a 50 GB plan, you can video-chat for 132 hours. You should be all caught up with your friends and family after that!

If you’d like to chat with your friends and family all at once, group video calls are for you, but will use the most data. A group video call with 2 other people will use 1.2 GB per hour, which means you’ll be able to do a group video-chat for 29 hours on a 50 GB package.

How can I stay on top of my data usage?

You can use the Usage Tracker on MyXplornet to get details on your current data usage. If you need more data, consider topping up or check out Our Internet Packages for other Xplornet Internet plans that may better suit your needs.  We recently updated this page to help you compare Skype video call usage for each package.
