In September 2022 Xplornet became Xplore. Read more here.

We caught up with Shane, our Authorized Xplore Dealer in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, to chat about the latest network improvements in the area and the impact that access to high-speed Internet is having on the local community.

As the owner of Snidey’s Sales and Service, Shane, an Elmsdale resident for 45 years, and his team of local technicians have been offering high-speed Internet from Xplornet for 15 years. He told us his “customers really appreciate dealing with local technicians who live in their communities.”

A lot has changed in that time as Xplornet continues to invest in the area to bring even faster speeds and improved online experiences to more rural Nova Scotians.

In February 2020, Xplornet, Develop Nova Scotia and the Municipalities of Colchester and Cumberland collaborated on a plan to enhance high-speed Internet service in the area. Just a month later, the COVID-19 pandemic drastically increased demand for reliable high-speed Internet as customers were working from home and in lockdown. In response to this, the plan was accelerated and, in just 100 days, Xplornet activated wireless broadband at 16 new tower locations to bring 25 Mbps speeds on unlimited data plans to over 16,000 homes and businesses.

Beyond the 100-day plan, four additional towers have been built to provide service in Tatamagouche, Wentworth, Chapman Settlement and Kemptown – with more to come. All towers have also been upgraded to offer speeds up to 50 Mbps.

Xplornet is also making other upgrades in the area. Most recently, the Elmsvale tower was activated to provide high-speed Internet to an additional 675 underserved homes and businesses in the area.

Shane told us these projects have delivered big improvements to the day-to-day lives of local residents and businesses. “With each passing day, we install more and more clients with Xplornet high-speed Internet and, once they are connected, they are more equipped to do all the important things online from their homes in rural Nova Scotia. It truly changes their lives in a positive way. We are thrilled to be a part of that process.”

As part of Xplornet’s commitment to offer rural Canadians access to the latest network technologies, work also continues to bring fibre Internet service to over 4,000 homes and businesses in Colchester and Cumberland counties. This means that residents and businesses will have access to gigabit speeds on a reliable pure fibre network.

“Given that Xplornet is Canada's largest and most committed rural Internet provider, they are the most equipped to deliver on their services,” said Shane.
