Xplornet Brings Internet Rinkside as Sponsor of World Hockey Championships

January 1, 2005

Plaster Rock, NB – Computers will be humming when the puck drops at the 2005 World Pond Hockey Championships, being held February 18-20 on Roulston Lake in Plaster Rock, N.B.

Xplornet, the high-speed Internet service provider based in Woodstock, N.B., is sponsoring the Championships and giving participants and spectators the opportunity to skate the ice and surf the ‘Net at Roulston Lake.

To add to the blue-line action, Xplornet high-speed Internet will be available at the Xplornet Internet Café. The Internet Café will be featured in the main tent with complimentary Internet access for those wanting a time out from the excitement to e-mail friends or explore the web. Tournament participants and spectators can e-mail updated scores to friends and family back home.

Wireless Internet service will also be offered at Roulston Lake through a Wireless Hotspot. Anyone with a wireless enabled laptop will be able to access the Internet from the sidelines, including tournament officials, members of the media and spectators at the event. The Wireless Hotspot will allow updated scores and hockey highlights to travel to fans around the world, connecting everyone to the game.

On top of an initial $500 tournament contribution, Xplornet will donate up to $50 towards Plaster Rock’s new recreational centre for every new Xplornet subscriber in the area activated before March 31.

“We are happy to be a part of such an exciting event for New Brunswick,” says Bruce Barr, CEO of Barrett Xplore Inc. “Action from the World Pond Hockey Championships is followed by fans all over the world, and Xplornet is proud to help bring that action to many more people through our wireless Internet presence at Roulston Lake.”

Barett Xplore, through its Xplornet brand, continues to revolutionize high-speed Internet access for unserved and underserved markets across Canada.

“Xplornet is bringing Internet exclusively to Roulston Lake for the World Pond Hockey Championship,” said Barr. “Sponsoring the tournament is a great way to celebrate Canada’s game in New Brunswick.”

The 2005 World Pond Hockey Championships will have 96 teams competing and organizers are expecting more than 6,000 spectators over the three days of the tournament. Teams from around the world, including England, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands are participating in this year’s event.
