Telesat, Barrett Xplore Team Up to Provide Broadband Via Satellite

January 1, 2005

WOODSTOCK, N.B. – Telesat, one of the world’s leading satellite operators, and Barrett Xplore Inc., a leading Canadian wireless broadband service provider, announced today a multi-year distribution contract that will deliver a whole new level of communications connectivity to Canadians in rural and remote communities. The agreement names Barrett as a national service provider for a new satellite broadband service operating on Telesat’s Anik F2 satellite.

Telesat’s new satellite is the first in the world to commercialize the Ka-frequency band, a breakthrough satellite communications technology for delivering cost-effective, two-way broadband services. Telesat’s Ka-band technology delivers always-on, always-ready high-speed Internet connectivity anywhere in Canada, regardless of where users live. Designed specifically for the millions of Canadians who do not have access to DSL or cable, Ka-band service provides cost-effective high-speed Internet nationwide – without sacrificing a phone line.

“Telesat’s state-of-the-art technology is a strong addition to our existing satellite broadband capabilities, and a complement to our fixed wireless high-speed Internet product,” said Bruce Barr, president and CEO of Barrett Xplore Inc.

“Telesat is committed to providing reliable Internet services to all Canadians – no matter where they live,” said Larry Boisvert, Telesat’s president and CEO. “Barrett Xplore shares our vision, and our services complement each other perfectly. Together, we want to make Canada’s ‘digital divide’ a thing of the past.”

Subscribers can take advantage of the satellite broadband offering through Barrett’s Xplornet brand, one of the largest and fastest growing wireless high-speed Internet service providers in Canada. Xplornet offers nationwide service to consumer and business markets through long-established national dealer networks and has a strong presence in many smaller communities where broadband was traditionally unavailable or impractical.

“Our focus is to establish Canada’s first wireless broadband network for consumers in rural, remote, First Nations and suburban areas – everywhere in Canada,” Barr said. “Our new affiliation with Telesat will play a vital role in realizing this exciting goal.”

To help finance Xplornet’s aggressive service deployment, Barrett’s recently completed a $30 million financing, one of the largest private equity placements in the Canadian communications sector in the past several years.

Details on the service packages and pricing for both residential and business customers will be made available over the coming weeks. Barrett Xplore will begin its regional Ka-band rollout in April, with national availability in July.
