Vancouver Island on Verge of Broadband Revolution

On Vancouver Island and the mainland B.C. coastline, high-speed Internet providers have considered rural, remote and First Nations communities to be inaccessible or too expensive to supply, other than via satellite in some locations.

All that is changing with the arrival of new wireless broadband services through Barrett Xplore's Xplornet brand that can reach virtually any comunity on the Island and coastline, as part of the company's offerings that deliver high-speed Internet everywhere in Canada. In July, Barrett Xplore and Telesat will launch a national satellite high-speed Internet service operating on Telesat's Anik F2 via the Ka-band frequency, a breakthrough for delivering cost-effective, two-way broadband services. Designed specifically for the millions of Canadians who don't have access to DSL or cable, Ka-band service provides affordable broadband without sacrificing a phone line.

Service packages start as low as $59.99 per month, with download speeds up to 512 Kbps (up to 20 times faster than dial-up). Business service packages have download speeds up to 2.0 Mbps (up to 75 times faster than dial-up).

Another new technology through the Xplornet brand is the Tachyon satellite broadband service, a carrier-grade solution for small and medium-size businesses, as well as larger corporations, in locations previously unreachable by terrestrial broadband.

Yet another offering is Xplornet's Direcway Ku-band satellite broadband service which provides customers with another alternative for residential and business type applications. In addition, Xplornet's mobile high-speed Internet service permits RVs, trucks, vans, off-road, emergency vehicles and other mobile platforms to access all Xplornet broadband services no matter where they are parked.

"Our state-of-the-art satellite broadband capabilities are a strong complement to our fixed wireless high-speed Internet product," said Bruce Barr, President and CEO, Barrett Xplore. "With Xplornet's array of services, small and remote communities on Vancouver Island can enjoy the same high-speed Internet access that cities have - at last, users in rural and remote B.C. regions will no longer be prisoners of slow, poor or expensive Internet."
